Weaning with Kindness
25th February 2025Weaning Through Your Baby’s Eyes: What They Wish They Could Tell You
Weaning is one of the biggest milestones in your baby’s first year. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice, pressure to do it the right way, or fear of choking, you’re not alone.
What if we stopped for a moment and looked at weaning through our baby’s eyes?
I’m Lisa, founder of Intuitive Weaning and creator of the Weaning with Kindness method, and I want to take you on a little journey.
Welcome to Your Baby’s World
Imagine you’re six months old.
For your entire life, milk has been your comfort, your safety net, your everything. It’s warm, familiar, and predictable.
Then one day a spoon heads toward your face. Or a piece of broccoli lands on your tray. New textures, new smells, new sensations. You have no idea what’s happening.
How do you react?
Maybe you grab it and squish it between your fingers.
Maybe you take a lick but spit it out.
Maybe you throw it on the floor again and again.
This isn’t fussiness. It’s discovery.
Babies learn through touch, taste, smell, and play. What might look like not eating is actually a baby building confidence with food.
The Secret to Weaning with Confidence
One of the biggest struggles I hear from parents is the pressure to get it right. But here’s the thing.
Weaning isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.
When we see weaning as a skill our baby is learning instead of a task to complete, it changes everything.
Less stress. More trust. More fun.
Three Things Your Baby Wishes You Knew About Weaning
I need time to explore before I eat.
It’s normal for babies to play with food first. It doesn’t mean they don’t like it. Think of it like learning to walk. We don’t expect them to run on day one.
I mirror your energy at mealtimes.
If you’re anxious, your baby picks up on it. If you’re calm and relaxed, they feel safe to explore. A deep breath and a smile go a long way.
Mess is part of the magic.
I know, clean-up is a mission. But mess means engagement, curiosity, and learning. Grab a splash mat and let them get stuck in.
You and Your Baby Are a Team
Whether you’re starting with purées, baby-led weaning, or a mix of both, remember that you can’t do it wrong when you lead with kindness.
Go at your baby’s pace.
Trust the process.
Enjoy the journey, mess and all.
